British Best of the Best – Gimson and Burnet take Nacra 17 Gold

British Best of the Best – Gimson and Burnet take Nacra 17 Gold

It’s a lot easier to wait around when you’re in the lead,” said Anna Burnet on shore as she watched the 49ers in their medal race sitting motionless in the sunset. Moments later, the horn blew, the Nacra medal race was canceled and her and John Gimson became the European champions. With a decisive 1,2,1,1 […]

The Untouchables

The Untouchables

The most exclusive club at this European Championships today must be the top three in the Nacra 17 fleet. A dizzying 39 points clear of the fleet and 11 points between them, the British duo with two italian teams chasing delivered a masterclass in championship precision and resilience. Leaders John Gimson and Anna Burnett won […]

Proving ground for young Italians

Two hours of waiting were worth it for Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei who solidified their lead on the fleet by eight points with a 6,2. An unceremonious swim for Briton John Gimson and charging world champions combined to drop he and Anna Burnet to third place behind Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti. Tita […]

Young Italians float out to a bigger lead

Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei wove a masterful path through the minefield of a difficult race course to extend their lead in the Nacra 17 fleet on day three of the European Championships. Two 2nd places moves the young Italians ahead of the pack, with an 8-point gap back to John Gimson and Anna Burnet […]

Junior Champs making mark on the Fleet

It’s hard to stand out on the Italian Nacra 17 Olympic team with Gold medalists and world champions as teammates but for the moment, Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei are linking fickle shifts and putting the pedal down to lead the fleet. The Italian pair have won the Junior World Championships twice and have been […]

Gimson and Burnet make a solid start

A solid start in the only Nacra 17 race today led to a clear win for Gimson and Burnet of Great Britain, a result even more impressive considering the pair had not trained since August’s world championships. A knee injury for Burnet, attention to sponsors and fitting out a new boat conspired to keep them […]

European Championship – How to follow the race

We have officially kicked off the 2023 Nacra 17, 49er and 49erFX European Championship in Vilamoura, Portugal!  Last night, we had around 400 sailors of 34 nationalities, nearly 100 coaches and numerous organisers and supporters gathered at the Vilamoura Marina for the opening ceremony. Today, the racing started at 12:00 UTC, with 2 fleets for […]

Exciting new formats for Nacra 17 – Testing after Paris

The Nacra 17 fleet has endorsed a two year trial period to test new formats for racing. At the 2023 AGM, the fleet endorsed two new options to conclude regattas, specified the period of testing should be from September 2024 to September 2026, and opened the possibility for other format options to emerge. The first […]

Modern, lively and sophisticated, Vilamoura has developed around its marina, and is today one of the largest leisure resorts in Europe.

The town is built around a tourist resort begun in the 1970s. But the Romans already knew the area, as is clear from the ruins of Cerro da Vila, preserved in the museum of the same name, beside the access road to Falésia Beach. Excellent hotels and tourist villages, and golf courses of international repute offer a complete package for those looking to spend some relaxing days by the sea. The marina, the largest in the country with 1300 berths, is the main hub of entertainment, not only for those who arrive by boat, but for everyone spending a holiday in the area and who come here in the late afternoon or evening to enjoy an ice cream or dinner. It’s also the right place for shopping, with a wide range from local craft stores to the most prestigious international brands. As for the nightlife, there are many bars and clubs with the best DJs and the Vilamoura Casino promises to really get the adrenaline running.  There are countless activities to do during the day. Tennis, horse riding, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, parasailing, boat trips, fishing, the range is so huge you’ll be spoilt for choice. The warm waters and golden sands are a stone’s throw away. From the pontoon east from the Marina, the sands of Vilamoura Beach extend to Quarteira; and to the west is Falésia Beach, which stretches for miles, only finishing at Olhos de Água, so there’s plenty of space to lay out your towel and sunbathe on the beach. Safety conditions are the best, and there are many amusements for a few perfect days at the

seaside.
