Back to overview

This is official notice that the 2020 Forward WIP European Championship in Garda are now cancelled. As the world continues to tackle and address the Coronavirus outbreak, we will not be able to conduct the regatta as planned. Additionally, the hosts are not able to delay the event to later dates in 2020, and therefore we are announcing cancellation. For those who have already paid, you will be able to get refunds.

At this time we will not be seeking an alternative event host after the Olympics, but as the world addresses this outbreak we may look to add a European Championship in the fall months.

By now I’m sure most of you have returned to your homes as we practice social distancing and look to minimize the worst effects of this outbreak. We look froward to a future where we can all race together again.

Asian Championship Further Delayed
The Asian Olympic Qualifier was further delayed today and new dates have not been announced. The initial regatta was scheduled for mid-March, and was delayed until Mid April. The event is now further postponed without a fixed date at the current time, and we will look to reschedule that event when it will be appropriate.
Outstanding Continental Qualifiers
The European, African, and Asian continental qualifiers are each outstanding on the slate of qualifying events for Tokyo 2020. World Sailing is ultimately responsible for scheduling these regattas, and we will work with World Sailing in order to best advise them on when and where suitable opportunities to race might exist. We will update you all as soon a plan can be agreed, and approved by the IOC.

Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, is famous for its stunning harbours and sailing culture.

It is, without a doubt, a world-class racing and regatta destination. The downtown competition venue offers quick and easy access to a vibrant city with a celebrated culinary scene, fantastic shopping, and dynamic arts and culture. As well as big city sophistication, Auckland also offers an incredible natural setting; beautiful beaches, volcanic cones, island getaways and expansive parks are never too far away.

Home to sailing champions and the highly anticipated 2021 Americas Cup, Aucklanders and New Zealander’s alike are proud of their sailing heritage.

Here, the Championship will enjoy huge support from the public. Auckland is looking forward to welcoming all athletes, teams and supporters of the 49er, 49er FX and Nacra 17 World Championships.
