Clearwater, FL. Day four of the Nacra 17 World Championship went off without a hitch. The less than stellar wintery weather that Clearwater has produced has now subsided, and finally the sailors were able to sail in nearly perfect conditions out on the Gulf of Mexico.
Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin made the best of a light airs day three at the Nacra 17 Worlds to move to 3rd overall after the young Australians scored 5,4,1. It was a long day on the water, almost six hours, so maintaining concentration was difficult, but absolutely key.
Allan Norregaard and Anette Viborg Andreasen rocketed up to second place overall in the Nacra 17 World Championships, the Danish duo showing a rare mastery of the demanding conditions on the turbulent waters of Clearwater Beach, Florida.

The crews tried to make the most of it on the second day in a row without racing due to the lack of wind at the Barcelona International Sailing Center’s facilities. The races on the fourth day of the Nacra 17 European Championship got cancelled. On day 3 there was too much wind and on day 4 there was not enough. With about knots of wind on the race course in Barcelona, the 42 teams from 23 countries participating in this European competition had to stay ashore without racing.
Four races are scheduled for today. The calm after the storm… Light East winds, between 5 and 10 knots, and big swell (2,5mtrs) are forecasted for today. At this moment (11h.) there is a very light NE breeze. The fleet is waiting ashore.
All three scheduled races were cancelled today due to severe wind conditions with gusts of wind of almost 35 knots and two meters’ waves. Austrian Thomas Zajac, who is sixth in the classification of the open championship after sailing six races with his partner Tanja Frank, summarized the feeling of the fleet: “Under these conditions, I think that to have a fleet race with so many Nacra 17 boats would be dangerous.”
Strong winds and driftwood on the race course made it a challenging second day of racing in Barcelona. The wind speed went up from 12 to 17 knots from the NE, and there were a lot of waves today. The fleet of 42 boats from 23 nations completed three races on the second day. With a total of six races the teams can now discard their worst result.
Brits Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves are leading the Nacra 17 European Championships after 1 day of racing. The teams sailed three races on the opening day of this continental event that takes place in the Barcelona International Sailing Center (BISC).
The double Olympic medallist Iker Martinez, will defend his title as European Nacra17 Champion in Barcelona this week. 42 teams from 23 countries and three different continents are competing at the Europeans 2015, including 13 Olympic medal winners and over 50 World and European titles.
Up to 13 Olympic medal winners will meet in the Nacra17 European Championships 2015. The 43 teams from 24 countries are finalizing the last details and tuning up their boats during the training sessions. At the BISC, the nautical sports’ training center of the Parc del Forum, free activities are offered to visitors during the event.
43 teams from 24 countries and 3 different continents will take part in the Nacra17 Europeans in Barcelona from 26 September to 3 October 2016. Nacra 17 is the most spectacular, fast and beautiful Olympic sailing class. Barcelona hosts for the first time this European championship and picks up its Olympic legacy.
How to follow the Nacra17 Europeans in Barcelona? Friday, September 25, is the official opening day of the Europeans Championship 2015 in Barcelona. The first three days will be filled with measuring the equipment and registration of the teams.
